'Recalling Jiangnan' at Suzhou Art Museum
“Recalling Jiangnan: 2020 Chinese Ink-wash Paintings by Renowned Shanghai Artists” is underway at Suzhou Art Museum, Jiangsu Province, through September 18.
The exhibition features nearly 90 paintings created by 12 well-known Shanghai artists, including Han Shuo, Jiang Hong, Che Pengfei and Chen Xiang.
“Shanghai-style painting, one of the most important art styles in China’s modern and contemporary art history, was strongly influenced by the art in Suzhou and its neighborhood,” said Zhang Lixing, curator of the exhibition. “The poetic and profound ambiance in this ancient city perhaps conjure up a utopia in the mind of many local artists.”
This year is the 550th anniversary of the birth of Wen Zhengming (1470-1559), a master painter from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) who was born in Suzhou.
“The exhibition pays a tribute to the ancient master, as he formed a unique style that developed under four generations from his students, forming an unsurmountable status in Chinese art history,” Zhang explained.
