Johannes Tan and Johnny Panagiotidis felt it was time to embark on a new chapter when their lease in the previous flat expired.
The quest for a property that fit their lifestyle led them to the center of historic downtown, at the intersection of Huashan and Wukang roads. This move was more than just a change of address; it was about finding a home that would foster both creativity and comfort, providing a refuge for their unique style to blossom.
The interior of the flat reflects a minimalist and Scandinavian-inspired style.
Tan has over 15 years of expertise in recruiting top-level professionals in China and APAC.
They have visited 51 flats in total. "Though our initial hope was to find a charming laneway house or a restored heritage apartment, this apartment inside a modern building caught our eye," Tan said.
Despite being in a modern structure, the fact that it was just eight stories high set it distinct from the conventional high-rise flats they disliked. However, it was the big, open-plan layout that drew them in. It's also ideal for taking leisurely walks with their dog, Xixi, through leafy streets and immersing themselves in the vibrant local scene.
The Scandi-style interior complements their growing mid-century collection.
The decor and color scheme are consistent from the living room to the balcony.
Unlike the cramped layouts of typical modern apartments, this space offers freedom and space to breathe.
The layout needed to promote a sense of fluidity, so determining how to split the open area was critical.
"I knew I didn't want to go with the traditional sofa-against-the-wall setup. The floating couch felt more modern and inviting. Plus, I wanted to make sure the TV wasn't the first thing you saw when you walked in," he said.
The decor of the flat is minimalist and Scandinavian-inspired, which was influenced by their former residence.
Clean lines, light wood, and organic materials create a welcoming environment that serves as the basis for their increasing collection of mid-century modern furniture.
The console table behind the lounge separates the lounge and eating area and lets them showcase personal items for decor and character.
"My main focus is on creating a cohesive color story and making sure the apartment feels warm and welcoming; a place you just want to relax in," said Tan, a seasoned headhunter with over 15 years of experience recruiting for high-level positions across industries in China and the rest of APAC.
Although his professional life has been centered on talent acquisition, his creative pursuits provide him with the balance and fulfillment he seeks.
Photography was his first love, documenting the world with his DSLR before transitioning to the convenience and flexibility of an iPhone.
His photos and vacation snapshots cover the residence, each one capturing a frozen moment in time and providing an insight into his travels.
The dining room furnishings and decor match the living room's color and texture to create a cohesive look.
Tan's creative expression did not end with photography. He discovered his passion for painting a few years ago, relying on his gut rather than academic training. His paintings have now become a focal point in his home. A giant picture he made serves as the center point in the living room, and its hues influence the apartment's overall palette.
Over the past few years, he has embarked on a new journey as a content creator on YouTube, sharing glimpses of his daily life on his channel, JohannesLee.
Tan sees the house as an extension of who they are.
"It's a place where I can truly be myself," he said. "It's where I surround myself with things that inspire me and a place to nurture my creativity and well-being."
Wood and warm tones are added to the master bedroom.
The furniture and decor were chosen with the idea of telling a story rather than simply filling space. Many of the artifacts have sentimental importance, either as gifts from friends or as modest treasures obtained while traveling.
These things, whether a stack of books or a handmade vase, serve as continual reminders of the people and places that have shaped their path.
Tan spends most of his workdays in his modest, basic home office. It also displays his paintings and photos.
"We started collecting small home accessories during our travels – things like throws, placements, or small art pieces. They don't have to be expensive, but they're much more special than something you'd find on Taobao because they hold memories of a particular place and experience."
Home is a reflection of who he is and what he values.
"It embodies my personality, interests, and passions, creating a space that inspires and nurtures both my creativity and well-being. Here, I surround myself with meaningful things that bring me joy, offering a sense of comfort and authenticity. More than just a place to live, it's where I feel truly free to be myself," Tan said.
