          Unlike Cantonese or Sichuan food, locating an upmarket Shandong cuisine restaurant in Shanghai is not an easy task. However, there is one place dedicated to elevating the region’s well-crafted culinary experience.

          Lu Style, inside the shopping complex on the corner of Huangpi Road and Fuxing Road M., provides an elegant dining spot for some of the best Shandong dishes in town.

          Shandong cuisine gained its reputation from imperial kitchen during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Later throughout the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it dominated the imperial dining table, famed for its eminent culinary skills and flavors.

          Six-flavor Yimeng pancake

          The cuisine combines both northern and southern Chinese flavors and is considered by many as the origin of many other Chinese cuisines.

          At Lu Style, the cuisine’s distinctive styles and versatility are brought to each table.

          The beautiful presentations are part of the exquisite journey. A warm hospitality is obvious, as well.

          I started dinner with a six-flavor Yimeng pancake. Pancake is a staple food in Yimeng mountain area.

          Inspired by the traditional process, the restaurant upgraded the simple home-style dish to a much more exquisite state.

          Six kinds of special sauces are created, made from the different ingredients of the province, including Rizhao dry shrimps, Heze chili paste, Weihai mackerel sauce, Linyi toon sauce, Jining pickles and Zaozhuang sesame salt.

          Braised beef

          The staff wraps the pancake with all the different sauces to give the dish its complex taste.

          Sea cucumber has long been regarded as a seafood top treasure and Lu Style selects only the best. There are different ways to prepare sea cucumber but the traditional braised sea cucumber with fungus is highly recommended. Aside from these finely prepared dishes, Lu Style also offers other typical Shandong fare, such as jiaozi (dumplings) stuffed with different fillings.

          Some are traditional recipes and other ones are creative, such as the jiaozi stuffed with sea urchin. The many different provincial pancakes and buns are worth trying as well.
